SPIRITUALITY

The purpose of counselling, coaching and every form of therapy is to move from dysfunction to function and to improve the self in some way. This is all well and good and absolutely needed. However, if we don't eventually expand our sense of who we are beyond our conditioned and conditional identity, we just keep polishing the surface. Without a glimpse of the "bigger picture", an experience of the transpersonal, an understanding of our spiritual context, "self-improvement" becomes shallow and ultimately unfulfilling.

I want to make absolutely clear, that by "spiritual" I do not mean any specific religious practice, church or creed. In my experience, religion often has very little to do with spirituality. Religion is based on dogma and belief, spirituality is based on experience and knowing.

We all have a deep longing for communion with something greater than our personal selves, and most of us have had an intimate experience of the "Divine", by whatever name and however fleeting. It may have come through nature, gazing at the stars and tasting infinity, or the breathtaking beauty of a sunset... It may have come in a moment of bliss with an intimate partner, overwhelmed by love; or in a moment of intense suffering, when the personality couldn't take it anymore and just fell away, exposing something deeper, eternal, untouched by pain. It may even have come in church. In any case, we yearn to come home to this Wonder again, closer to our real self.

At the core of everything I do, therefore, is the desire to help others (and myself!) to be able to live and breathe and relax in the presence of the mystery and beauty of that which we can't even name (but try to anyway and reliably get into trouble for).

I have no intention to convince you of my truths. They might not be your truths anyway, as spirituality is a very personal & subjective subject. I can only share what I have learned – successes as well as failures, and any helpful ideas & practices I picked up along the way. What you take on board and what you discard is entirely up to you. Spirituality has to involve some spiritual practice, and nobody can practice for you - yet it is absolutely fine to get some support. And, like it or not, we're all in this together!

If you have any questions about this, please give me a call, and I'll be more than willing to explain further as best as I can.
